Holiday Party 12/16

This year the Holiday Party was held, guess where, at the Shoreline Yacht Club in Long Beach! Thanks, once again, to the fine effort of past- President George Merino.

The afternoon started off with a nice present to all the members on hand - “free parking” in the Club lot.

Once you entered the Clubhouse you were greeted by Sandy Aden who was handing out name tags so everyone would know everybody’s names.  Next to Sandy was a large cardboard box that was filling up fast with gifts for a donation to the Toys for Tots program at USMC Camp Pendleton.

Upstairs, the bar was jammed with Club members who were getting into the holiday spirit(s).  Yes, the spirit was flowing as was the wine and the beer! Members were sharing greetings and stories and preparing for a Holiday feast.

New President Steve Kirby, emceeing his first Holiday Party, called for everyone to find their seats.  He gave a few introductory remarks and then it was time to enjoy the meal the Yacht Club had prepared.  The beef, chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables, salad and rolls were delicious.  Over dessert the group was asked by George Merino if we wanted to come back next year? The answer was a resounding YES! After a few more remarks from Steve, Greg Aden spoke about some of the future events in the planning stages and asked for input on other events, museum visits, and drives we could have.  Mike Scroggie then spoke about the history of the Spirit Award, which is given to the member who accumulates the most attendance points at events.

Named for Bill Barnett, who was a driving force in the club from its earliest days, this year’s winner was Phil Caliva.  Phil’s 165 points was  31 points higher than the second- place finisher.

Newsletter Editor Tim McNiff then thanked all those who contribute to the newsletter and also thanked the Club for hosting his and Joyce’s 51st anniversary dinner.  With that, the gathering broke up with Merry Christmas wishes on everyone’s lips.
