Bacon Run 1/11

After going to a few events in January, it became apparent that a new year renews a drivers’ dedication to showing up again, and The Bacon Run to Trancas Market was no exception. A good and friendly crowd arrived in 20-30 various makes and models of cars, with a handful of us Healeys in the mix. After parking and exchanging pleasantries on the East end of the lot, the mob instinctively migrated to graze at the fabled bacon buffet. The market seems to have had a renewal too, as the breakfast offerings seemed a little more upgraded this time.

Breakfast was secondary, though, as the real buzz was that “The Snake” was open again – a twisty 2.4- mile stretch of Mulholland Highway between Kanan Road and Sierra Creek.

Popular with motoring enthusiasts and local law enforcement, The Snake had been closed to traffic for seven years after the 2019 Woosley Fire. (Yes, 2019 was seven years ago!) After breakfast, about twelve cars left Trancas Canyon and caravanned to The Snake, which lived up to its name, offering some sporty twists and turns. We even passed someone getting the full experience with one of those famous souvenir speeding tickets. No one in our group was so unlucky, but we had a minor event after The Snake.

In the lead car, Phil Caliva smelled fuel, and when you’re out in front and you smell gas, odds are... it’s you. We all pulled over at a safe spot just before the Las Virgenes intersection, where legs were stretched, the banjo fitting on Phil’s front carburetor was quickly re-secured, and we were on our way again.

If you want to test your wheels on The Snake, head out to a Bacon Run! Club members in attendance: Dan Bleiberg, 100-4; Steve Beck, 100-4; Phil Caliva, BJ8; Peter and Janet Hutchings, Jensen Healey; Dan O’Neill, 100-6; Monica Lago-Kaytis, Bugeye; Clay Kaytis, BT7; Tim McNiff, BJ7.
